If Joe Biden wins the election, he will probably keep Trump’s space military force. It is also likely he will follow Trump’s return to Mars policy. However, Biden will also use NASA as a tool to combat climate change, something Trump has frowned on.

President Trump has decimated NASA’s ability to conduct research on the earth. Under Biden, NASA will be on the frontline in implementing the Green New Deal, a congressional resolution that lays out a plan to fight climate change.

NASA currently uses satellites to track ecological changes, like deadly storms and rising sea levels. Scientists analyze the data and try to implement solutions to these complex problems. These results will be a central part of Biden’s effort to invest in solar, wind energy, and fortify structures to withstand climate change.

The Green New Deal calls for firming up the space agency to better understand how environmental changes affect the earth. This a dramatic switch from current Trump policies. Every year in office Trump has tried to cut science and environmental research budgets. Biden will re-invest in these strategies. Democrats have been able to restore some of Trump’s cuts, but not all.

Finally, Biden will continue Trump’s space exploration policies and embrace a permanent moon base and work toward traveling to Mars. Refocusing NASA to a climate control role allows Biden to use clean energy and space discoveries as part of his economic plan. The Green New Deal is an investment that will not only save the planet, but create jobs too.
